In the history of football India has never contested in an international football tournament which is strange for such a big country. However India did manage to qualify once in 1950. But the country pulled out of the tournament for two reasons. The first reason was the travel cost they claimed that they couldn’t afford to fly the whole squad and staff over to host country Brazil. - When a football was capable of postponing a war
In the 60’s brazilian football club Santos FC was the most popular club in the world, with their starman Pele they were beloved by everyone. In 1967 Santos FC went to play in an international tournament in Nigeria. Nigeria at that time was ravaged and terrorised by a civil war between the government of Nigeria and the inhabitants of forieng Biafra. Both the Nigerians and Biafrans wanted to see the “football king” Pele play for santos. So both parties signed a ceasefire so that the 2 sides could watch the game. Unfortunately the ceasefire only lasted for 2 days, but during those 2 days nobody was killed. This was truly remarkable for one of the most cruel civil wars ever.
